The first time I can recall hearing about window film was way back in 1975 when I was a young credit department employee at 3M’s Manhattan office.
The inventor of 3M’s metallic film came through our office quite excited by our first large installation at the Pan Am Building on Park Ave. There were high fives all around and I didn’t pay very much attention to the celebrations.
Little did I know that some day in the future I would become the National Sales Manager of 3M Window Film!
When I “retired” from 3M in 2007 I decided to open my own window film installation company in my hometown Tampa, FL. My goal at that time was to leverage my 33 years of 3M experience and build a family owned business that would take window film installations and product selections to an entirely new level.
Our clients would select from all major window film companies rather than be restricted to one exclusive choice. Given my history at 3M and my direct experience with the 3M film and how we compared to the competition; I was completely versed in which films offered a better value to the end user and at a better cost investment.
Certainly, I appreciated the brand power of 3M and that red logo. The well-respected 3M technology had long ago been focused on making things by the mile and selling it by the inch. This philosophy, or Post-It note mindset was incredibly successful for sandpaper, tapes and masks. It was less so by an order of magnitude for window film.
During the decades after my Pan Am introduction 3M elected to concentrate their efforts on more lucrative markets than window film.
Our market share continued a decline and we elected to trade on our brand name by repackaging outside manufacturer’s films into 3M labeled boxes.
Advanced Film Solutions markets the true innovators of window film technology like Eastman Chemical’s LLumar, Vista, Huper Optik and SunTek brand films.
The solid shatter film capabilities of Madico a less known company that can boast installations at Federal buildings across the USA and Embassies across the globe.
